Lately I have beem fascinated by the old adverts painted on walls where shops once stood. If you glance around old buildings you will surely spot one. My first was spotted on Byker High Street, there was an old shop advertisement painted on the side of a wall - so old it offered chimney sweeping or tools for use in shipyards.

I have found it so fascinating (yesterday I found the ghostly letters of an old pawn shop on a building), that I have decided to record them. So if you come across any old adverts painted on walls, give me a shout!

Ray it was a great suprise to see the story of the glass galleon in Wednesday ,March 19. Although I never had the pleasure in meeting the creator, Dick Hodgson, I do know that a local prominent businessman commissioned the artist to make three, one for each of his children, in 1972, plus another that was destined for Canada but sadly arrived broken. The artist worked at parsons within the Lab dept, hence burning glass.
Later in 1995 I restored and repaired two of them, bringing them back to there former glory, the other was destroyed in a house fire!!
I am unaware if they ever won any awards or prize??
I am Looking at creating a similar large scale scene for the 2010 Tall ships race.
All the best, Craig Colquhoun, glass artist

Dear Ray,
With reference to your Stalls Hygiene photo. I believe the Scotswood road butchers outfitters was J R Dalziel, the showroom is now Jack Brodie childrens wear. Dalziel now have two sites a factory at William St Felling and a distubution site at Monkton Hebburn.I have worked for Dalziel since 1974 and my Dad worked there before me

Hi Ray

One such advertising board, as opposed to hoarding, that I would like to mention is the one that stands on the wall of a building on the corner of King Street and Quayside. Perhaps the oldest surviving advertising board in Newcastle, it advertises Tyne-Tees Steam Shipping Co Ltd routes to the like of London, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hamburg etc. A photograph can be seen @ http://www.fototime.com/DF2D61BA849CC4F/orig.jpg

I understand that the board has recently undergone some restoration which is a 'good sign.

Regards
