Unbelievable

By Ray Marshall on Mar 2, 07 12:10 PM

I have always harped on about people not throwing old pictures away and told readers: 'Give them to me, I will find a good home for them, usually with myself or in local photo archives'. At last, my pleas have now found fruition - God Bless the printed word!

When the post arrived this morning I found, amongst my letters, a bulky envelope which contained a family photo album, with an explanatory letter saying that someone was clearing out and about to dispose of it when told they should send it to me.

Since then I found that the original owner, and main person in this fantasic collection of 1931 YMCA Camp pictures, is an RAF lad killed in the Second World War. I am over the moon, firstly to know the album is now safe and, secondly, to realise I have a lovely future Remember When story.

But that wasn't all. Within an hour of getting this album a Remember When reader came into our front reception with TWO family albums which they had copied onto the computer and so had no further use for.

These albums was of a seafaring family who had numerous photographs taken in Gateshead and some in Alnmouth, pre Second World War, were also gems.

Again, I will use these in future Remember When's and then, as I told our donor, store them - if ever they want them back, no problem.

Please do not destroy or dump your old pictures. I will make sure they have a good home, either with myself or local archives.

Great to read that your pleas for folk not to throw photographs and other documentation is having the desired effect and it must have been marvellous for you to receive the photographic albums.

I wonder how many millions of photographs have in the past simply ended up on the council tip or incinerator, such a tragic waste of historical information.

I’ll bet there are thousands of family history researchers out there who would have appreciated their ancestors keeping photographs, birth, marriage and death certificates within the family archive.

On the matte of the reader who copied the originals onto his computer, lets hope he has made a back up ;-)

Look forward to seeing the pieces on the photographs in the future.

Its important to remember the contribution that people of the North East made to Great Britain's history.
There is a lot more to the past than just a bunch of kings and queens.

About ten years ago I acted as the executor for an old friend of mine.

The couple lived mainly in West London and died childless. The few distant relatives were not interseted in their photograph albums. I have kept them ever since but have little use for them.

I refuse to just throw them away but I am equally reluctant to just stick them in the attic.

Any suggestions?
